media autobiography

Hello my name is Brandon and I have always been interested in social sciences and would enjoy pursuing my major in it. Political science and sociology seem to always catch my attention and I believe this journalism class will help improve my media literacy and adapt me to the modernization of mass media.
  •  Mass media is modernizing and picking up a newspaper is a rare occurrence for any young adult but I typically pick it up twice a week just to keep up to date with the news because reading the news I believe gets me a bit more in depth with the situation than watching it on T.V.. I prefer the local news such as San Jose Mercury, and for international news I choose the Wall Street Journal.
  •    I have never started a magazine subscription
  •     Going to the theaters is also a rare occasion for me when I can simply torrent or stream them and watch them on my laptop or share it with others by streaming them to my T.V.; I make sure to check out the reviews on a film before watching them: Rotton Tomatoes, IMDb, and Netflix . I watch a couple of films a week , preferring social satire films.
  •  When it comes to listening to music I generally use Pandora or Youtube. I have never been really interested in music videos. I’ve been a huge fan of rock since I was a teenager
  • I hate the radio. Whenever I get in my car I always have the stereo on mute; 50% of the time its advertisements and the music just doesn’t fit my taste. I doubt the music is really selected by the D.J.’s, seems to me they go more for ratings and only focus on what the mass desires than playing what’s fresh.
  •  The only thing I enjoy watching on Television is sports. As a kid I was more than obsessed with watching my series and entertainment shows consistently but now as a young adult it seems more of a distraction from the goals I have.
  •  As for the internet I enjoy reading articles and using it to stream and obtain films and sports. I don’t socialize on the internet any more not because I didn’t have time I can always make time for social media no matter what; but stopped because it can feel senseless watching short videos and being informed on my friends social status. Communicating online has its essence which I believe has been stretched too far with several apps.

  1. Same here that never start any magazines subscription! I'm curious that why you don't. In my case, it's because magazines in Hong Kong focus on private lives of artists, it's really awful.

  2. You're right about DJs not choosing music on most stations. I look for radio stations that are not pre-programmed, like KQED (mostly news) and KFJC and KSJC (Foothill College and San Jose State).

  3. If you don't listen to the radio, what kind of music would you prefer to listen to? It's interesting that you hate the radio, but I agree too. That shouldn't stop you from enjoying music though :)

  4. Its really refreshing to me to hear that there are other people out there who don't feel the need to constantly be in touch with their friends' small social updates. I also can't help but agree with your statement about the radio; I can't recall the last time that I willingly turned on the FM/AM radio to listen to music.
